CAN YOU EAT ALL KINDS OF FLOWERS?

Sensible route to edible flowers:

  1. Know what you can eat. Flowers have been used on food as decorations and as infusions for centuries, but equally very important to know which ones are safe to eat. There are some flowers which are poisonous, toxic and or simply can cause an irritation in your gut. Always best to follow a chart which is well known and researched for example click here http://homecooking.about.com/library/weekly/blflowers.htm
  2. Even when you are sure of the variety of the flower, it is advisable to ensure that the flowers are free from any pesticides and herbicides. Do not eat flowers used in conventional floristry, as they are not only fed chemicals to keep them fresh, but often sprayed with fungicides and herbicides. We would also suggest not use flowers growing by the road side as they would have absorbed a fair amount of vehicle pollutants.
  3. If you suffer from pollen allergies, then best be cautious about eating flowers. Always remove the pistils and stamens from broader flowers like roses and gladioli.
  4. We can’t stress enough about knowing your plants, but please do not assume that if you can eat a vegetable or a root of a plant, you can eat the flowers of that plant. The same principle applies to herb flowers.
